SADA’s project coordination and planning application, dotMaps, is projected to save SDOT $7 million within the first year of launch.

SADA Systems is excited to announce that the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has deployed SADA’s interactive project coordination and planning application, dotMaps, to improve visibility into city construction projects. SDOT along with public and private agencies can now view, search and coordinate all open and planned projects in real time, helping to streamline resources,  minimize traffic, and save costs by eliminating duplicate work.

Seattle’s leadership knew that a $940 million transportation levy which passed in 2015 for repaving city streets would increase traffic congestion despite the long-term benefits. With this in mind, SDOT managers began looking for a better way to coordinate construction projects between agencies and utilities. SDOT selected SADA after a bidding process and learning about the City of Chicago’s success with dotMaps. SDOT deployed dotMaps in August 2017 and since then, the Project Coordination Office has saved nearly $800,000 from improved coordination between agencies. SDOT is projecting savings of around $7 million dollars within the first year of using dotMaps.

“Within a short timeframe, dotMaps has improved communication across agencies regarding construction projects, and serves as a valuable mechanism to minimize the effects of road work on the public,” says Scott Kubly, director of SDOT. “dotMaps is helping managers work together better, and that’s really important because we can decrease the disruption on our roads, while at the same time saving taxpayer dollars.”

SDOT project managers and affiliated utilities now have a visual representation of all construction projects overlaid on a city map. If, for example, multiple agencies are planning projects in the same area at the same time, visibility provided by dotMaps can help officials coordinate resources and identify potential conflicts. SDOT managers can also find information on the type of project, agency, project lead and timeline for each open project, and receive alerts about new projects that have been scheduled.

Meanwhile, SDOT construction engineers can use dotMaps to create groups of projects in specific geographic locations where there is a high density of development. By compartmentalizing the projects in this way, engineers can quickly and easily alert affected project managers and create timed construction sequences, which helps to reduce costs and minimize public disruption. Prior to dotMaps, SDOT was able to coordinate roughly 3% of city streets. Now the city is coordinating 100% of projects.

“We’re thrilled to see that dotMaps is helping reduce the negative impacts of road work and helping various SDOT stakeholders work in tangent,” says Tony Safoian, CEO and President of SADA Systems. “It’s clear that cities and other government agencies can be huge beneficiaries of fast, intelligent and interactive mapping and planning solutions.”
