SADA is happy to announce the coming of the annual Google Science Fair! Honoring inspiration and curiosity, ambition and tenacity, Google is holding its online science competition for any student between the ages of 13 to 18 from all over the world, with the theme: “Everyone has a question. What’s yours?”
The Google Science Fair encourages students to be inquisitive about the world and community they live in, to ask questions and perform the experiments necessary to answer those questions. Partnering up with CERN, National Geographic, LEGO and Scientific American, Google invites these students to post their science projects online so that they may compete for prizes, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
For the 2012 competition, 90 regional winners (who will each receive a Google Chromebook*) will be selected from around the world. From this pool, 15 global finalists will be chosen to come to Google headquarters in Mountain View, California to present their projects in front of a panel of esteemed judges. From these 15 finalists, Google will select a winner in each age category (13-14, 15-16, 17-18), as well as a grand-prize winner.
Prizes this year include a $50,000 scholarship from Google, a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with a National Geographic Explorer, Chromebooks for the winner’s entire class and in addition to an internship at Google, CERN or LEGO. In addition, this year, a new “Science in Action” prize sponsored by Scientific American will be awarded to a top science project that has shown positive, local community impact and the potential to scale in other parts of the world.
Google stresses that anyone ages 13-18 can enter the contest – after all, “geniuses are not always A-grade students.” So get thinking and get started – all entries must be submitted by 1 April 2012. The prizes are life-changing, and the potential impact of these projects, world-changing.
